A pictorial journey into the hilarity that is surfing in Southern California – with a focus on poor etiquette, bad photography, body contortions, overcrowding, and bad surfing. Stop by daily to see if you've been caught doing your best stinkbug power-squat...and please, don't be afraid to be my muse!

Kelly Slater Burned
Maggie Marsek sent in this pic of Sl8ter getting the slow burn from a telemark surfer during last week's swell. Good stuff, pun intended.

The Circus Is In Town
A few shots from my phone of the circus at Swamis this morning. I was out of the water by 7:15 due to the large proportion of surfers bobbing for apples and getting in the way.

The Point...
It's always interesting at The Point. Tomorrow should be no exception, which means that I'll be taking a pass. Here's one to get everyone in the mood. Pic from Surfshot.

Apologies
Sorry folks, laptop meltdown on Thursday. I'll be back Monday with a new computer. I'm scared of Vista, but we'll see.

A Proposal
During the winter wave season, I tend to bypass my local beach break in favor of a few spots south of me. Inevitably, I pass Cardiff Reef. Without fail, there is one to eight Janitors in the lineup at Cardiff. I propose that we rename this spot "Janitor's". Between the statue and the men with brooms, the apocalypse is coming.

More On Crowds...
...or should that be "Moron Crowds"? Reader Rick sent this in from the break I grew up surfing. While I didn't count, he's claiming 35 people just in this small snapshot of the beach. I can't wait until surfing isn't cool anymore.
PS. Sorry to those who've sent in submissions that have been missed. Apparently, the web bots have found YDD and are now sending me massive amounts of spam. I only spend a few minutes a day on this blog, and it's getting harder with all the spam.

Contortions
When it gets over nipple high, those guys on their funboards have a little trouble keeping their balance during that "parallel feet" takeoff technique. Pic from surfshot.

Flamus Interruptus
I got caught sneaking out for a surf yesterday morning at a North County beach break. After a few very good waves it was a very busy day from there. First, had to evacuate the office in Encinitas by 11am, then I got my family out of our home at 3pm because the air quality was so bad. I stayed behind with the dog and fortunately we're fine...it's still burning and far from over and it'll be hard to breath around here for weeks. My thoughts go out to those who weren't as fortunate in this fire.
