A pictorial journey into the hilarity that is surfing in Southern California – with a focus on poor etiquette, bad photography, body contortions, overcrowding, and bad surfing.

Costcool!
It's that time of year folks...get ready for summer. Check out the latest boards available at Costco...killer faux-veneers. This would look great strapped to the roof of my Woodie. Beach Boys flashback!
There's also something for the rippers who don't like it old school.
Pics by me and my crappy cell phone!

$199????? factor in markup, shipping, tarrifs (overseas products)materials, marketing, etc., and the labor costs must be about 2 bucks! I pity the workers, and scorn the buyers... and I weep for the future.
So you pity the workers and scorn the buyers? What about all the overseas products that fill your house, all the electronicis, textiles and other goods from China and SE Asia? Do you feel equally bad for them? Are you mad at yourself for buying an American car assembled in Mexico and filled with gas from Saudi Arabia? Why lash out at just the popout surfboards? Why not flush the whole US economy because it's all just a mass produced, bought on credit nightmare.

Those have been outsourced for well over a decade - or two, or three. The difference is you can still buy a board made in the USA, though not a DVD player or a plastic comb. So the question is why NOT do something positive for your local surfing industry while you still can?
nancy has a point, just try and buy basic goods without 80% of them being from China. This is a surf blog, not a DVD player blog, so comments about those crap surfboards are valid. By a car built in the US? Which ones are made here? Anon, I understand where you're coming from but the problem with Chinese goods is that it's an oppressive totalitarian state with a horrible human rights record. Free trade is great and all, but competing with slave labor is not (this is not jsut China). This is one area where protectionist tariffs are warranted. Oh but then your 401K wouldn't be as fat if all the US companies hadn't outsourced their manufacturing to China.
As far as gas from Saudi Arabia, our administrations, both Democrat and Republican alike have failed miserably for decades in coming up with an energy policy to get us off oil. Imagine if we'd have spent the Iraq war budget on R&D for alternative vehicles and mass transit? Think gas costs too much? It doesn't cost enough. Slap a $5 a gallon tax for R&D and maybe these fat slobs will get out of their Expeditions and into a Prius. Manufactured in India....
that is awsome, I think its cool that some corperations are getting into the surf industry, In south florida we have 3 shapers i know of that are all way overpriced like 600+ on a basic 6'6" setup and one that is fair around 400. I would rather buy a costco board brand new for surfing blowing rocks and lake worth on big days since ive destroyed many old boards there. For my board that i ride on safe days where i might get a ding I surf a FOX (john Parton) which is the reasonable local shaper but his cost is low because he cnc rough shapes, and hand finishes so they are still nice
I like to say a surfboard is like underwear, its only right for one person to use it. I think cookie cutter boards are good for beginners so they can learn in a cheaper way, but once they learn they can talk to a shaper and get that perfect board. Shapers need to get a cheap way to build beginner boards then sell the ones more advanced people ride which are custom, The guy I use roughs in a board on CNC then hand finishes and the boards are cheaper than the other shapers and i feel they are just as good and built faster. All the surf shops by me have a total of 4 shapers, which you have to ask the clerks about to even know they exist, other than that they are all cookie cutter boards and they are more expensive than costco's

Is it just me, or is the name of that surfboard company ironic in this context?
I can't wait to see these fools in the "lineup". Pearling every wave on the shoulder.
I like the bottom pic... Gonna get me some pork and surfboard tonight!
I saw this shortboard on san diego craigslist with dings and holes for $160 today
