Elmo...I Mean Emo, Surf Check

I never thought that I'd see the day where guys dressed like this were interested in the surf. Pic sent in by KaserOne.

Are we sure that's a surf check and not just an outtake for their next album/CD cover??

i remember being young and trendy too.
never did subscribe to the mass of surf clothing that was just beginning.
still wear basically the same cords, wallabees and tees as in high school.(although sidetracked a bit at times)
funny thing is all that shit they're wearing is mostly RVCA! surfwear!
stussy was 1st to bring rock fashion into surf and know it's all meshed.
let the young boys have their trend and have fun, yet if i see the "emo"
(what a stupid trend) behavior go as far as them kissing each other(as reported), i'm gunna puke.
they are just trying to shock people. good luck kids. it's all been done before and yer even late to this trend!
oh, and stay away from that certain spot!!!!!

funny thing is- levi, al, and tanner all shred harder than anyone who rips on them...ive always found that humorous.

extremely humorous actually...

El Hefe said...

Just becuase they rip, doesn't mean they don't look like a pack of metrohomos. Knost, with all his spastic moves, makes surfing look harder than it actually is. But that's just my opinion. My company sponsors him.

Anonymous said...

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck.....its probably a duck. Notwithstanding one's ability to shred or not.

Anonymous said...

Someone needs to tell the boys that those tight jeans lead directly to testicular cancer.

Anonymous said...

Any luck luring them into the van?

IDEA!* lets sign out of our google accts, post our true feelings on the issue anonymously, that way- no one knows who i really am...that'll show them!

seriously?! really?! no one gives kelly shit for being the biggest fucking walking billboard alive- is it because he's god in the water? Personally, i'd rather wear whatever i'd like and get payed for it (like al has accomplished)- rather than being told what the fuck to wear in my contractual agreement held by Bob McKnight.

to me- (a 24 year old) kelly looks more like a tool than levi, al, or tanner do. Again, they choose their wardrobe- Kelly doesnt. Hi, it's 2009...what, are you still not used to seeing hipsters, fashionistas, and stylists? its fucking newport- it's where they breed. get over it already, and talk about something worth while, rather than the fucking clothes some kids wearing.

KL said...

oh. and im not bitter. just quite blown away how mad the 'older generation' gets at what we wear- hahahahahahahaha, pick your battles.

Anonymous said...

The IV Surf shop actually labels a section of their jeans as "Skinny". I couldn't believe it.

Anonymous said...

Wow, a an awful lot of thinly and not so thinly veiled homophobia going on here. That's pretty cool, guys. Keep it up.

Who's Your Daddy said...

LOL. Hey LightGnar, who's angry? I'm an equal opportunity humorist...nothing's sacred here. Now, pull that wedgie out of your ass and lighten up!

El Hefe said...

....and Jessica Simpson's a great big fat person.

Anonymous said...

Aren't sacred cows meant to be slaughtered?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, the older guys used to laugh at you too, you old hippies!!!

Who are these "Beatles" from England? they look like girls!!!

hahahahahaha

christian said...

Why are they wearing their sisters' pants?

cb said...

wouldn't consider them donkeys, and the photo isn't, 'with a focus on poor etiquette, bad photography, body contortions, overcrowding, and bad surfing.' and, i really don't care what they wear.
sure there are better 'donkey' photos out there, but oh well. one bad post out of a handful of fun ones.

Anonymous said...

is this blog just dedicated to making fun of people?

Anonymous said...

No, just donkeys.

Anonymous said...

"I never thought that I'd see the day where guys dressed like this were interested in the surf."

is that a joke? didn't dora bum his fucking ass off and look 'hip' on his way out too? pretty sure he did. also pretty sure they wore tight highwaters, purcells, pendletons, army surplus jackets, with homemade haircuts back in the 60s...

so minus the v-neck, what am i missing? they look like surfers did back in the day- fucking outcasts.

awful post.

christian said...

To the poster before me: Yes, surfers a generation before wore shitty clothes and tried to adopt a certain style. The difference here, I think, is that the look older generations of surfers were going for wasn't something that could be bought in a boutique in Newport. The emo look is a calculated thing, with specific accessories and style guidelines. It's a very thought out thing. And an expensive thing at that.

I think there's a big difference between tight designer girl's pants and some dude from back in the day wearing an army surplus jacket and beanie.

Alex Knost and his crew tear this town, quit makin' fun of their fashion choices, better n' that tough guy "social D" fifties look yo!That woody is a "tits" surf rod ta boot!

Anonymous said...

Typical River Jetties crew (just don't hop 'em!)

Anonymous said...

The whole fashion thing is contrived to make money and depends on constant and meaningless change. Just a few months ago these guys were wearing baggy pants and backwards ball caps. A few years before their parents had long hair and bell bottoms.
About ten or so years ago everyone had to have a longboard. A few years back the fish made a strong re-appearence in the line up. Now we suffer with all the SUPs out there.
Maybe everyone shoud just get a kneeboard and pair of Duck Feet and be done with it....

Everything's been done before. Every tite pant guy looks like every other tite pant guy...or chick. Just like the Billaquikclones, you aren't being original, you're just jumping on the bandwagon that began roughly 7 years ago. There's even some old dude that's like 50 years old that hangs with Bob Hurly that rocks the tite jeans and Freddie Kruger sweater at Surf Expo every year. You wanna be that guy? Jumping on every fad that comes along? Fine, whatever dude.

Why do you have to have a "look"? Why can't you just be? Why spend that much time and money trying for "the look"? I wish I had that much time. I barely have enough time for surfing, hobbies, chicks, and work.

I like making fun of tight pants because these dudes get so defensive about their fashion statement. Then their friends from Newport get all butt hurt for them. It got the name EMO for good reason. After reading this thread that's poking a little fun at a silly fashion, I know why. Don't be such a EMO pussy when somebody makes fun of em. If you dig em, rock em with pride. Jesus christ.

"some old dude that's like 50 years old"

Ageist!!!

Anonymous said...

Some little kid says in my face
Fucking Faggot
Pants are too tight

why are you looking at my legs?

snoogins said...

jesus i cringe anytime i hear the term "emo" in this context. i think i just need to accept that the word has been transformed into some sort of insult and no longer refers to 80's d.c. bands like rites of spring, embrace, fugazi, ect. Then again it has been this way for a good 10 years if not more and most people don't know any better.

I absolutely agree with the anon #2.
I'm an 'old guy' and when i was there age it was fun having a group to hang with that were not the norm.
Especially in conservative NB!
At least they are using there imaginations!
I'd say most here wear surf co. wear
and surf exactly the same.
Widen your horizons people.
These opinions here smell very OC.
Remember there just kids having fun.
And ripping.
Side note; they are all really nice kids too.(at least Alex and Tanner)
This all reminds me of the early punk days in HB and NB.
Horrible how we've come full circle back into hardcore conservatism, in surfing no less.(a once rebellious lifestyle)
Good post actually. brings up interesting points.

----------------------

Well, I'm quite surprised at the emo-tion that this post brought on. I've always said that folks stop thinking that this stuff is funny when it gets too close to their own reality.

My personal view is that these guys can and should wear what they want. I certainly don't wear clothes that would make me look like a "surfer".

My original comment stands on its own...and the emphasis should be on the "interested in the surf" portion of my comment.

Enjoy the debate ladies.

El Hefe said...

That's it? That's how this verbal tickle fight ends? With a group reach around? Back in the old days, when men were men, we'd smack each other on the ass and thighs with wilted celery.

Anonymous said...

Give them a break, in the day we just new they were from Bakerfield, El Cajon, Escondido, Temecula or Indio out for a nice day of surf after tweeking and driving all night.

How does one become part of the Surf and Destroy collective? Tight jeans? An obsession with all things Knost? I want to be on the team!

Anonymous said...

bro alexknost is so hella tight yo
tight jeansareso in too aya

Danimal said...

Yeah Can Kicker! Come on in the water's fine! You're gonna have to put your short shorts on too!

found this on surfanddestroy and laughed

"Who's Your Daddy said...

Wow, you're a defensive bunch. It's interesting that I can approach the entire subject with a laugh, yet you seem to have much "venom" for the old guys! Hypocrisy has no age limit.

I was not hating on the crew that you idolize. Rather, I was making an observation that if I saw this crew on the street, sans surfboards, I would have no idea that they were interested in surfing. There is no malice in that statement.

Sorry to interrupt, please continue to be angry....."

further broken down=

"I was making an observation that if I saw this crew on the street, sans surfboards, I would have no idea that they were interested in surfing. There is no malice in that statement."

no malice- just plenty of judging, that's all guys, just some friendly judging of other people.

Anonymous said...

you guys are acting like youve never seen tight pants

Who's Your Daddy said...

LOL. I am judge and jury. You've got me pegged anon! Guilty as charged.

Now beat it fruit loop!

After seeing this, The Chips is ready to sell out and cash in on the next fashion trend. Guaranteed ,in one year you're going to see a pic like this with all the bros wearing The Chips pre-surf wifebeater and assless leather chaps (blueblockers are optional).

For a small upfront investment, you can get out ahead of this thing.

23 Chips

Anonymous said...

By the way, The Chips is curious who let KaserOne out of the van anyway.

Without a doubt this post is the easy winner of this year's coveted Donkey Award. Sure pushed a lot of people's Donkey buttons.

BTW.....did I miss the group reach around?

Can Kicker said...

Yep, The Donk cracked the big time today. The Angry Youth's wrath was unleashed. WYD is in sitting in the catbird seat, on cloud nine, basking & gloating!
All I can say is ... it's about time.

Anonymous said...

its funny how this blog is suppose to be "donkeys" when al tanner and levi are as far from that as you can be.

Anonymous said...

Donkeys do have an irritating habit of taking themselves too seriously, as opposed to say, Mules.

Bill said...

this was a priceless bit of shit, no doubt, how anyone can get agro about emo.

Anonymous said...

Macy's is having a blowout sale this weekend on skinny jeans,40% off.

Anonymous said...

go check todays drawing on surfanddestroy...

Anonymous said...

Laugh all you want old men, but Knost gets paid to surf well, gets his clothes free, and pulls mad tail. I can't hate.

Anonymous said...

That is truly what I aspire to...getting my clothes for free.

Anonymous said...

Free clothes part was in direct response to earlier posts about how much this "look" costs to put together, etc.

Anonymous said...

Hello? Has anyone seen old Art Brewer photos? Where do you think this stuff comes from? Ok the jeans were a little looser back then but come on! Striped tees etc. Anyone?? By the way, I work in 'fashion' & surf as well & skinny jeans are out yo. Another look worth some hate is definitely the homey cap/motocross look which is kinda the norm these days. What the hell place does that have in surfing? Ewww

Peace & Love

Rob?royal said...

all you cowards posting anonymously are idiots, and far to close minded.

come on, are you gonna call pottz a fag for wearing flourescent colors in the 80s, or occy?

so what if their trendy, as if, is it cool to check the surf from your gas guzzling hummer on big ass wheels with your corpo suit and red tie?

get a life and realise that there's a whole big world out there

Anonymous said...

I have to laugh at every single post here, including the fact I'm putting one up...

A long winded debate/diatribe over some f---ing Emo look? Yes they can surf, yes they look ridiculous if you're over the age of 30, yes those of us over 30 looked like a-holes to someone else when we were younger....what the hell...who cares.

I guess when there's no surf people have nothing better to do...

WYD scores for putting the shot up though.

matt said...

find your own style rather than copying fashion and art from another decade. and standing still on the nose gets boring. the 60's surf pioneers would be disgusted by the lack of style and balls of these emo kids. go surf something over 2'!

Anonymous said...

yeah all they do is just stand on the nose?

Chum said...

Those jeans really aren't that tight.

Does anyone even remember when EMO was a good thing at the Huntington Beach Library, right after all us HardCore kids thought it would be fun to try and sing our feelings instead of just screaming them out? Got tired of the dirtbag vs straightedge fights in the park?

Seems I remember wearing size 44 dickies on my 36" waste with cardigan sweaters, winos, horn-rimmed glasses
...until... an old man asked how I could run from the cops and jump a fence with my pants hanging so low...straightened up and bought pants my size, now I can run jump and become the old mand criticizing the kids....
