A pictorial journey into the hilarity that is surfing in Southern California – with a focus on poor etiquette, bad photography, body contortions, overcrowding, and bad surfing.
Stop by daily to see if you've been caught doing your best stinkbug power-squat...and please, don't be afraid to be my muse!
Probably the funniest Photo I have ever seen. An outstanding Photo. Classic, unique and well composed. Most excellent. The person that took this is a freaking GENIUS!
Have I mentioned that Alan M has no class? That he is like one of these guys who has never served in the Military, but likes to wear the uniform and medals? It says he got the photo, from Surfline. yes he did. Then he cut out everything he didn't like. Yep, a real ass hole.
Boy you really got a stick about getting credit for the photo huh? WYD already has gotten enough crap from people who don't like that they use their photos, so I cut out that info out for him. If you don't want your pix used , don't post them on free access sites fuckwad!
Alan, what you did, was wrong. That is the truth. No matter how you slice it, you were wrong. Yes you did find it on SL. But then, you cut it up. You decided you would take someone else's work, and have your name associated with it. Not claiming it as your own, but be a clever little troll by cutting it up, and submitting it in order to be associated with it. You are a small little person, who doesn't know how to take a photo, so you have to take other peoples work. At first, I was pissed. But having read your retort, I pity you. You really have no life, so you borrow one? Care for some more photos to claim? Send me your name and address, and I will mail them to you. As far as WYD not wanting photos with credits on them, why don't we let him choose which ones to use? It is his site. Besides, were you afraid he would not post it, and use your name, with a logo and credit on it? And, as far as the crack about business not being good, isn't that another example, or you not minding your own business? (Meds? I ran out....grrrrr)
1. 51773 took the pic. 2. I certainly wasn't aware of the "original". 3. I don't have a problem with watermarks, Alan, no need to cut them off. 4. I think this is all pretty funny. 5. Back to your regularly scheduled bitch session.
Dude you really need to chill, I don't give a rats ass about "credit", and I didn't cut it up so that WYD would think it's "mine". The watermark distracted from the picture, and people have threatened YDD and WYD for posting pix that were culled from other sites without permission. So I cropped it out. Get over it, you are reading waaaaaaay to much into this. I've never claimed to be a photog, or that any pic I've submitted to this site was taken by me. I always tell YDD where it was found. This site is about posting funny pix related to surfing. This is not an art forum, and there's no money involved. So BFD. Here, to make sure the whole world knows: THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN BY MYSURFINGPICTURES.COM!!!!! THIS WAS NOT TAKEN BY ALAN_M, NOR IS IT CLAIMED THAT ALAN_M HAS ANY RELATION TO THIS PICTURE EXCEPT HE FOUND IT ON SURFLINE USER PHOTOS, CROPPED THE WATERMARK OUT TO MAKE THE PICTURE LESS DISTRACTING AND TO AVOID LAWSUIT MESSAGES BEING SENT TO "YOUR DAILY DONKEY" FOR POSTING IT TO THIS F R E E ! SITE. end of disclaimer.... Happy? Didn't think so.
I agree. I did go off. But it was not over nothing. Two things occurred. I have let people know my thoughts on having my work distorted, and I have learned, that if someone offends you, it is best to keep quiet, lest idiots have something to write about. If you don't, and you complain about it, people who have no integrity, or cannot see or understand your point of view, revert back to their childhood. They fail to hear the message, ignore what is said, that, or they do not understand what is being said, and feed on the way it was delivered. The same way people will not listen to what is said but would rather go off on the person for how he said it. In their eyes, if someone fails to act as they see fit, then they are obviously wrong. Everyone has an opinion, and they all can't be right. So why act if your position is right? You, my friend, may be an asshole as well. It is not up to me to make that determination, but you could well be. My apologies to Alan M. for getting upset and using the words I did. yes, he took my work, and cut it up, but evidently, some do not think that is wrong. Then again, their morals, may be lacking, along with their character. Some think I should not say anything when wronged, that it would be uncool to mention something. that maybe he didn't see cutting it up as he did was any big deal. But these people, who don't find harm in what he did, are at times, also the people, who think it is ok to be ignorant, and stupid, or just plain inconsiderate when he first had an idea to do this to something that was not his. Whether or not his intent was to steal, or just to modify, the action of doing it is wrong. The real issue, is that he didn't even pause to ask, or email, or contact anyone one to see if they would mind. Why? BECAUSE HE COULD NOT CARE LESS ABOUT WHAT THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE PHOTO WANTED. And there is the problem. He took modified, without any consideration, and people do not think that inconsideration, is wrong. Ok then, I did not consider my words to him. Why is that now wrong? Because it offends? I was offended. Who is right and who is wrong, and who among us can say one is one way, and the other, the other way? As I am wrong, so is everyone else. Another point. I just read over this and realized, that the people who wrote their comments, using short simple words and stinging names, will never read, nor understand any of this. The may begin, but then they will quickly pigeon hole the whole thing, call me some name, and dismiss it all as not being important enough to read. Then, they will write another short insulting blurb, and feel good about themselves. Yep, that's me. A giver.
Damn, 51773 clearly cares A LOT about this whole deal. I guess I find it hard to see the harm in Alan M cropping the distractions from the image. It is clear that he never intended to lay claim, etc. You seem to be REALLY sensitive about usage, but this wasn't used for anything other than a community laugh. I imagine it went something like..."Holy shit, that is hilarious. It would be perfect for YDD!" Then, grab it, crop it for maximum laugh factor and send it. Please let me know if I'm wrong here Alan.
Point is, public surf sites, blogs, etc. are just that—public. If you are as sensitive about the issue as you seem to be (your prerogative) then it may be best to not post your photos in these places. People take classic photos from both past and present to use them for blog posts, etc. Sometimes they're credited, sometimes they aren't. Nobody is capitalizing beyond a shared blogging experience.
I think people went off on you a bit because you came off really harsh about something that honestly isn't that big of a deal. Seems like you already copped to this. It may have been good to chime in and say something like, "Hey that's my image, thanks for checking out my shots on Surfline." I don't mean to be condescending here; just a thought.
Bottom line is that this whole damn blog is about the hilarious side of surfing. Why in the hell do I care enough to write all of this?

51773, do you need model releases for your subjects before you can post shots of them? Or, is that only if commerce is involved? Honest question here.
Either way, glad I'm not the poor sap in the photo.
ok.
sober now.
Sorry folks. Truly.
Thanks for the words of wisdom.
hey 51773,
