A pictorial journey into the hilarity that is surfing in Southern California – with a focus on poor etiquette, bad photography, body contortions, overcrowding, and bad surfing. Surfer Shreds Huge Waves With a Self-Propelled Surfboard
Motorized surfboards are nothing new, but typically we just see some yutz puttering around a glassy lake on them. Bo-ring. But today, finally, their potential is being realized. Check out braver-than-you big wave guru Garrett McNamara using a WaveJet to tame some giant, unfriendly waves.
We wrote about the WaveJet earlier this year, and it's very cool technology. It's basically a pod that can be attached to small watercraft like surfboards, kayaks, and rescue boards. It has twin inboard jets that are powered by lithium-ion batteries. That means that unlike most jetskis, which run on gas, they can be used in heavy-water places that are protected sanctuaries (like Mavericks and Ghost Tree).
The system is controlled by a wireless wrist band, and if (when) you fall off, the board's motor will automatically shut down. It supplies 20 pounds of thrust and can go 12MPH for about 40 minutes on a full charge. Now, that's no where near as fast as guys can get whipped in behind a jetski (think 30MPH), so it's unlikely that we'll see these on a giant day at Jaws, but this is a major step in the right direction.
"It was so amazing to kick out and not have to paddle to get out of harm's way and get right back to the peak to catch another wave," says McNamara. Oh, and for those of you not familiar with surfing lore, that's not just some random guy talking. Garrett McNamara is a legend. Remember last month when someone surfed a 90-foot wave and likely smashed the world record? Yeah, that was Garrett. If you think that 40 is old, I would say that the 44 year old McNamara effectively crotch-kicks that notion and gives me hope for the future."

Buried Beneath A Keg
I took a few days off to enjoy the small run of swell in So. Cal over the past four days. That, and to put a few back. Thanks to reader Chris who sent this one to our attention...keg belly at its finest. Pic from www.magicseaweed.com.

Guess the Celebrity...
Website fitsugarDOTcom had the picture above posted with the caption, "Can you guess who this celebrity is hanging ten?"
Even more humorously, the reveal stated, "We're
impressed at how good her stance is! Malibu locals spotted the actress,
47, surfing several times this week — a West Coast girl through and
through!"
Give up? Mrs. Helen Hunt
PS. I don't fault Helen for trying, but for the website to try to make her sound competent...that's just wrong.

Holy Dog Shit!
This is what Slater's dog thinks of his latest World Title... or is it a comment on how the ASP runs its show? I wish the pooch could talk!
PS Champ, you need a little touch-up paint!

Weekend Warmup
Reader "TL" sent this one in. He was fascinated by the girl's long-sleeve, bikini bottom, bootie look.
If we've learned anything here, it's that it takes all kinds.

SUP Weak - All The Rest
Here's a data dump as I don't want to hold onto these anymore. SUP makes me ill, although the one in the middle is classic. Enjoy the weekend and stay off the SUP!

SUP Weak - Maui Yard Sale
KaserOne sent this in from Maui. I'm not sure if this guy is setting up for a yard sale or getting ready to dive for some lobster. K1's on Team Lobster.

Preview: SUP Weak
I recently stumbled upon some good SUP material, so I'll devote next week's posts to it.
As a preview, I present to you the next movement in SUP...this is the kids' size. Hand carved Koa wood versions will be available on craigslist next month for $1,500.

A Moment in Maui
This pic was sent in by KaserOne over the weekend. I'm not sure what I like more, the personal flotation devices, the belly tat, or the awkward, lay-back, almost-spread eagle pose.
Thanks J, keep them coming.
